Drawing on her experience as both a parent of a son with autism, as well as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Mary Lynch Barbera will provide listeners with information to help children with autism learn language and other important skills. Mary will highlight strategies from her book: The Verbal Behavior Approach: How to Teach Children with Autism and Related Disorders, and provide guidance using the scientifically proven strategies of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) specifically utilizing B.F. Mary Joann Lang, PhD : A Beacon Towards Healing!
A Beacon Towards Healing! focuses on principles and values that will enhance
the quality of life for children, adolescents and adults with Autism. The
program will focus on several areas, including education, therapies, and
emerging issues that will help parents and service providers better
understand and implement paths to success. The program will cover a broad
range of topics in order to address the array of challenges that the
individual with Autism, the family and the community face everyday.
The first in the series will introduce the program host, Mary Joann Lang,
founder and director of Beacon Day School and Beacon Autism Spectrum
Independence Center (BASIC), in Orange, California. Later programs will
introduce staff and service providers who will speak on a variety of issues.
Another goal of the program will be on understanding the integration of
thinking, learning and behavior for individuals with Autism. In addition,
the programs will generally take a developmental perspective, given that
there are significant issues at each stage of life that require attention
and change.

Working together with a child’s parents, OT, PT, etc., is a very important element. This mother and occupational therapist team promotes constant communication.
